Manawatu-based The Better Water Company offers comprehensive raw water testing and filter recommendation

Bore water, while a valuable resource, can sometimes contain unwanted elements. These impurities can affect both the safety and taste of your water, especially for young children and the elderly, potentially leading to gastrointestinal issues and other health concerns. High levels of certain minerals can also leave unsightly stains on your fixtures and laundry, making daily chores more difficult.

The Better Water Company offers a tailored water filtration system, including advanced cartridge filtration and UV disinfection, to ensure your bore water is safe and potable. Before we can recommend an appropriate solution, we need to do comprehensive water testing through a certified lab. This helps us identify various contaminants such as  iron, manganese, E. coli bacteria, arsenic, fluoride, nitrates, and hard water minerals.

Customised filtration systems for optimal safety

Each bore water source is unique, and so are the contaminants it contains. Whether you’re a homeowner, farmer, or run a food manufacturing business. Our bore water filter systems are designed to address specific issues such as:

  • Iron and manganese removal
  • Hard water treatment
  • Low pH correction
  • Bacterial contamination
  • E. coli and other harmful pathogens

The two-barrier approach for effective filtration

The Ministry of Health recommends a two-barrier approach for providing safe drinking water. At The Better Water Company, we adopt this method by combining sediment filtration with Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection.

  1. Sediment filtration: Removes suspended solids, silt, and other particulates from the water.
  2. UV disinfection: Kills harmful bacteria and pathogens, making the water safe to drink.
This system is installed directly into your existing plumbing at the point of entry, ensuring that all water entering your home or business is automatically treated and of potable grade.

The process we follow to find the best solution for your water

It's important that you know that we don’t just recommend or sell any product without first understanding what’s in your water and what you need. To do this right, we’ll gather details about your site, understand how you’ll use the water, and take a sample for testing. This helps us provide the best solution for you. We’re passionate about getting it right the first time, so we’ve created a clear process that’s easy to follow.

We are water treatment specialists with solutions for water from rivers, bores, lakes, springs, and roof collection.

Need an On-site Visit & Test?

  1. Arrange a site visit - Contact us to arrange an on-site visit. Once a site visit has been arranged, a Technician will arrive at your site. They will talk to you about your needs, ask you some questions, look at your setup and take photos and the water test
  2. Water Test - The technician will collect the water test. You may need to assist them with access to your water supply. Most rural supply tests need to be taken from the water source, before any tanks (except rain water)
  3. Review - Once your results are received, these will be reviewed alongside your Needs Analysis form to determine what equipment is recommended, where it should be placed in your system and how it should be set up
  4. Quote - You will receive a quote, this will include a letter of explanation of what issues you have and how they can be resolved, a schematic diagram to give you an idea of what this will look like at your site and a quote with pricing of your recommended solution

Specialised filtration options for complete water quality improvement

Automatic Iron Reduction Systems
A mined ore, Pyrolox® effectively reduces iron, sulphur and manganese from problem water.
High Flow Carbon Filters

High Flow Carbon Filters present the best cost-effective solution to handle much higher flow rates and provide a longer life throughput.
Multi-media Sand Filters

Where it is necessary to treat all incoming water (point of entry – POE) in large volume for the removal of grit, sediment, turbidity, and organic matter but also where there is a problem with oxidized iron (‘rust’) and other precipitated contaminants such as manganese or scale particles.
Neutralising Systems

Low pH makes water very acidic and aggressive towards metal plumbing and fittings. This often results in high levels of metals such as copper, iron, and zinc dissolving into the water. This can cause a bitter metallic taste and usually leaves green/blue staining on baths and basins. Failure of fittings is also very common because of this corrosion with copper hot water cylinders being most at risk.
High Flow Carbon-KDF Filters

Where it is necessary to treat all incoming water (point of entry – POE) in large volumes for the removal or reduction of a variety of contaminants from water including chlorine, tastes, odours, pesticides, volatile and organic carbons, dissolved colour and chloramines, and heavy metals.
Water Softeners

Excessive hardness in water due to high levels of calcium carbonate will cause scale buildup on pipes and particularly water heating elements. There will also be a difficulty getting soap and detergents to lather. All these problems can be eliminated efficiently by installing an Automatic Water Softener. They utilise the ion exchange process where the calcium is replaced with the more soluble sodium. This is all done automatically using a timer control which allows the water softener resin bed to backwash and regenerates with a brine solution as required.

Frequently asked questions about raw water testing

It’s recommended to test your bore water at least once a year, especially if you rely on it for drinking and household use. Regular testing helps ensure that the filtration system is working effectively and that no new contaminants have entered the water supply.

Yes, after installing the filtration system, your bore water can be safely used for irrigation but this needs to be planned into the initial size of the system we recommend. Systems are customised to the volume of expected water usage. The filtration process removes harmful contaminants like bacteria and excess minerals, protecting both your plants and soil from potential damage.

Installation times vary depending on the complexity of the system, but typically, it can be completed within a day. Our team works efficiently to ensure minimal disruption to your household or business while delivering a fully functional filtration solution.
